What filtration does for each supply
City water is all groundwater from the West Salt River Valley sub-basin, pumped from 19 city wells and disinfected at all six supply facilities (City of Surprise 2025). Carbon takes out the disinfectant taste and odor.
EPCOR's Agua Fria district blends Colorado River water delivered by the Central Arizona Project, Agua Fria River water stored at Lake Pleasant, and groundwater, with surface water treated at the White Tanks plant (EPCOR 2025). EPCOR tells customers taste may change with the seasons; a carbon filter evens that out.
What it won't do
- Soften water. Calcium and magnesium pass through carbon.
- Lower dissolved solids much. EPCOR's Agua Fria water ranged from 182 to 692 ppm TDS in 2025; bringing that down takes reverse osmosis.
- Replace maintenance. Carbon wears out and needs replacing on schedule.
Picking a system
Two designs dominate. A self-cleaning backwashing tank costs more and holds enough carbon to last several years; a big cartridge housing is cheaper to buy but needs fresh cartridges regularly. Do I need a whole house filter if I have a softener?
Only if taste or smell bothers you. A softener handles scale; carbon handles taste. Many homes need just one of the two.
Will a filter help with the seasonal taste on EPCOR water?
Usually. Activated carbon absorbs most taste and odor compounds, which smooths out the changes EPCOR says can come with its surface-water and groundwater mix.
Is a whole house filter the same as a sediment filter?
Not quite. A sediment filter only catches sand, grit and scale flakes, and it often sits in front of a carbon system to protect it. Carbon is what changes taste and smell. Many whole house setups use both, one after the other.
